James graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in acting from Drama Centre London, in 2007. The following year after he graduated from college, he appeared in an episode of Lewis and also played the part of Ben Davis in the BBC Three comedy-drama film Dis/Connected that same year.
Following his performance in Dis/Connected, the producers cast him as Arthur Pendragon, in the BBC One fantasy TV series Merlin.
