To begin with, Joanna Garcia was born into the family of Lorraine, a housewife and teacher, and Jay García, a gynecologist. At the age of 10, she was selected by a local theatre company, and later was contacted by Disney Channel, but her parents wanted to give school education priority. Joanna attended Tampa Catholic High School, but before finishing secondary school in second grade she had a role in the series produced by Nickelodeon – “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” (1994–1996). Later, she matriculated to Florida State University, but abandoned her studies after the first year to devote herself exclusively to acting, moving to Los Angeles.
Concerning her career as an actress, Garcia has had several roles in television series and movies, including “Superboy” (1992), “SeaQuest” (1994) and “Second Noah” (1996) while still at Tampa Catholic High School. After leaving college she joined the cast of the acclaimed series “Party of Five” (1998) playing the role of Hallie. In 2000, she had a recurring role in the series “Freaks and Geeks”, but fame really came in 2001, when she appeared on cinema screens in the casts of the films “Not Another Teen Movie” and “American Pie 2”. She played the role of Cheyenne Hart-Montgomery, the eldest daughter the protagonist, in the sitcom “Reba” (2001–2007), and in 2008, Garcia starred in the series “Privileged”, in which she plays Megan Smith. The following year, the actress was a guest star in the third season of “Gossip Girl”, in the role of Bree Buckley. Moreover, she appeared as a guest star in “How I Met Your Mother” (2009), and in 2010, Joanna co-starred in the series aired on the ABC – “Better with You” (2010–2011) – created by Shana Goldberg-Meehan, already the author of the popular television series “Friends”.
Not letting-up at all, in 2013 she entered the recurring cast of the third season of “Once Upon a Time” playing the character of the little mermaid Ariel, and since 2015, Garcia has been starring in the main role of the series “The Astronaut Wives Club” based on the novel of the same name by Lily Koppel. Soon, the comedy film “Fist Fight” is going to be released, in which Joanna is in the main cast.
Finally, in the personal life of the actress, she has been married to Nick Swisher since 2010; they have one child. When not engaged in acting, she likes to do volunteering, teaching English to children of non-American origin. She is also a member of the organization Make the Commitment , which aims to raise awareness about uterine cancer, and We Reach, which takes care of organizing events for charitable purposes.
