I have an Independence Day tradition: I like to listen to songs about America. My favorites tend to be critical of this country in some way, such as Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" or Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA." The gifted Bijou Phillips has lived a peculiar life. She lived her formative years in South Africa, California, and New York. In the sport of equestrienne, she excelled. She started modeling at age 13 in order to get out of boarding school and was one of the youngest people to appear on the covers of “Interview” and “Italian Vogue.” Several Calvin Klein advertisements also featured Bijou.
